Hi folks- I need to send a box (about the size of a small suitcase) to the US. Does anyone have any opinions on shipping/courier services that are exceptionally good or bad? Is DHL my best bet? It doesn't have to be quick- I just need the box to arrive in one piece. Anyone want to take a guess as to how much I can expect to send?

I think if it's less than 40kg, your best option is a courier, more than that and shipping by air freight becomes a good option.

I'm told DHL is the best choice here from people that use couriers. I've had a number of people advise me against using EMS.

Using regular post from here, I've found to be unreliable. Not too slow when all goes according to plan, but things that go astray go very slowly if they get there.

For air freight see the folks who do the Thai Airways air freight, under the name of Globe-something or Global-something. They're upstairs in the Hong Kong Centre on Sothearos, or you can contact them via Thai Airways office. Freight was $6.50/kg to Australia last time I sent something, including packaging, and they come to your house to pick up and pack it. You have to pay extra for customs clearance at destination, or else go and fill out the forms yourself.

Just wanted to post an update on this:

I asked around some more and found several people who had positive experiences with EMS. I just stopped in yesterday to their office near the Post Office to mail my box to the US.

Staff was pretty friendly. I opted for the more expensive air freight. Their rates are posted online, which is nice:

Even better is that they have package tracking. And with the US postal service I can sign up to have updates emailed to me. My box has already left the PP station.

Fingers are crossed that this has a happy ending.

Hi here is another post covering the same topic.

So, I have to send some things back to Australia - some of it quite heavy.

TNT/DHL appear to be ridiculously expensive, and I'm looking for other, reliable freight companies. Has anyone had any experience, or better, recommendations?

Any advice or pointers greatly appreciated.

One last follow-up to this: My box arrived to the US in good condition and it took just about one week. So if you need to mail something overseas quickly (and don't mind paying extra for it) I can give my thumbs up to EMS.

Stay clear of DHL they have no security once here and they also ship soley through bangkok. they lost a lot of mail recently!
FEDEX ship via singapore and guarantee security to your door.
I have had numerous DHL parcels ransacked by local post workers, who just smile when you show them half your inventory is missing.
DHL put there parcels through the regular mail once here and take no responsibility for it once it leaves the cargo wharehouse.
EMS, or FEDEX for me now.
Apologies for the negative feedback but they ripped me bad a few times.

Even if that's true, they should be fine for outgoing services? I know a number of people who use them regularly (for outgoing) and haven't reported any major problems with them.
