Hi all,

I'm heading back to the US in a couple of months and would very much like to bring my cat with me. I adopted Raja when she was about 4 weeks old in Phnom Penh and she's been living with me in Kampong Cham for the past 6 months.

My flight is on China Airlines and apparently they only allow animals to travel in the luggage compartment...

I have no experience traveling with pets internationally -- anyone have advice on the documentation I'll need, best ways to transport her, etc.?

Thanks in advance,
Jess

PS I have a backup plan already in case I can't make this happen, so no need to worry about Raja's future.

Hi Jess, I tried to fly from China with my cat and dog and all of the Chinese airlines refused to take them. I flew from Shanghai with Thai air and they were fantastic. Despite having all the paperwork we had huge problems getting onto the plane but once out of China everything was great. Bangkok really helped us out by letting us check on our dog who had flown in the hold (despite Thai air staff in Shanghai insisting we could not check on him). The only concern I would have with you traveling to the US is that you are flying with a Chinese airline, they are not very experienced with pets and while the ground staff in Cambodia and wherever you have a stopover would be fine you might find the actual airline staff unhelpful. We took the cat into the cabin as Thai Air allows this (as long as the container conforms to certain parameters) if you put the cat in the hold then he/she can have more room and a bigger container but you do hear of horror stories where they forget to provide oxygen or heating to the compartment. The place where the animal goes is not part of the normal luggage compartment it should be a special area where they can heat and supply oxygen to it separately. All I can say is that if I were to travel again with my pets I would try to go with Thai Air or a European/Western airline where they would be more sympathetic to my concerns. We asked on each leg of the journey for the airline crew to confirm that the dog was on board.
I hope this helps
Nicky

here are a couple of websites that others have passed onto me. mainly information gathered while we lived in Seoul

http://www.airanimal.com/

http://www.pettravel.com/passportnew.cfm

every country has different immigration rules for entry to cats as they do f
or two legged entrants

These were taken from here.

Hope this helps. Please post any solutions you find here please . Updated info is great to have for others to read

Hi JessD:

We handle exports from Asia quite frequently at PetRelocation.com, and I thought I'd offer you some tips.

One of the most important things will be to insure that whatever airline you fly her on, you are flying only on planes that have pressurized & climate-conrolled cargo/luggage cabins. Bigger planes (like 737's and upwards) all have pressurized, climate controlled cargo holds. Smaller regional jets (Embraers, CRJs, etc.) do not -- these are the planes you hear the "horror stories" about.

With regards to import requirements/documentation for the US, they are:

- Current rabies vaccination certificate (needs to have been given within the last year but more than 30 days prior -- if given less than 30 days prior, you will have to sign a document upon arrival in the States)

- Health certificate dated within 10 days stating your pet is healthy to travel internationally and free of disease.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Kind regards,
Rachel
