Phnom Penh – A ‘people’s tribunal’ on wages and working conditions in garment factories took place last week in Phnom Penh.

The tribunal was held after a tumultuous couple of years in Cambodian garment factories.

In 2010, 261 labor leaders were reportedly suspended or dismissed after leading a strike of around 200,000 garment workers to demand an increase of the minimum wage – from US$61 a month to US$93 a month.

A representative from the Asia Floor Wage Campaign, which helped organise the tribunal, told the Phnom Penh Post that, “the monthly minimum wage for garment workers in Cambodia should be US$281,” a figure that stands about four times the current minimum wage of US$66 a month.
