Seavmey Sorn wins Cambodia's first medal won in Taekwondo

Cambodia won her first medal in the on going 26th SEA games in Taekwondo after 17 year old Seavmey Sorn lost out in the semi finals against Vietnam's Thanh Thao Nguyen at the Korean-Indonesia Friendship Taekwondo center, Jakarta today.

Sorn Davin got to the semi finals after winning Malaysia's Maznal Samadin the Quarter Finals of he Under 62 Female Category.

In the semi finals, the Phnom penh Born High School student was overwhelmed by Thanh Thao who raced to a 3 points lead in the first round. By the second round, Sevmey came back to reduce the tally 3-1 before Thanh maintained her three points lead going into the last round.

Sevmey who sustained a slight injury to her chin in the win over Malaysian Samad came back stronger in the third round to reduce the scores to 4-2 before the boozer.

"I am so excited to win this medal and to be the first medalist for Cambodia in the 26th SEA game" an excited Sevmey Sorn stated moments after the medal ceremony. " To see Cambodia flag hoisted gave me great joy and I want to thank my coaches, the ministry of sports, and all the sponsors who supported us in this event" the bronze medal winner said.

" I hope by winning the first medal, even though its bronze will encourage other athletes to go for gold." she added.

Meanwhile hope of Swiss bases Pin wanheap of a podium finish in the finals of the 100m race was dashed as the Batambang born sprinter could only manage a 7th place finish with a time of 10.91secs which was better than his in the 100m won by Indonesian Franklin FB in 10:37 secs. The silver medal went to Singapores Yee foo Gang who finished 10:46secs and Thailand's Wachara Sondee came 100th secs behind to go home with the bronze.

Pin Wanheap will now look to 200m for any chance for a podium finish and the Kingdom will be hoping that Kieng Samorn and Takizaki Kuniaki will do better in the 800, 1500m and marathon.

At the end of the first day of events, host Indonesia leads the medals table with a total of 48 medals, 24 Gold, 15 Silver and 9 bronze medals followed by Singapore with 8 Gold, 8 Silver and 8 Bronze while is third on the table with Thailand with 6 Gold, 9 silver, 9 bronze.
