Veterinarians in Phnom Penh - not Agrovet

Took a 6week old pup to Agrovet. The French vet was a bit spaced out so getting info from him was like pulling teeth, plus he looked into the pup's ears but either missed or neglected to tell me how tick-infested he was.

On the way home I got supplies at Happy Dog Petshop on Kampuchea Krom. The Thai proprietor(manager?) immediately noticed the ticks upon casual play with the pup. Puppy got his ears cleaned, given a de-tick bath, and groomed without charge ($5 normally). The store was clean, boarding kennels were immaculate, the grooming area looked professionally managed. They have a Khmer and a French vet on premises. Prices were competitive and they were helpful and informative without hovering or pushing products/services on us.

Wondering about pet-owners' experiences with the vets at this place or with any of the other vets in PP?

Thanks in advance..

Nathalie

We have been using this vet for over two years now - well recommended. Family run and owned - English spoken

Dr Lim Pak is OK for general maintenance but if you have a serious problem I would still recommend Agrovet, we have had animals die at Dr Lim Pak due to basic problems that he failed to identify. I have never had a problem with Agrovet but then with all of the animals we rescue I am there quite often.

Hi there -
Thanks very much. Have either of you heard comments about Happy Dog on Kampuchea Krom? People seem to like them but not heard of anyone seeing their vet.

Went to Agrovet after my dog was fed ratpoison. The dog got several infusions and a blood transfusion and had to stay in the clinic for several days. The doctors and staff were very caring.

My dog is happy, healthy and alive again. Thanks to Agrovet!

Hi - thanks for the feedback. Perhaps it is a fluke thing, or just one vet who I will avoid in the future.

I also have never had a problem with Agrovet, and i go there weekly with rescue animals. I think everyone makes mistakes at some point, but I also know that agrovet have to fix many of lim pak's mistakes, so for things like surgery I would only ever recommend agrovet.

Shoddy work by the vet not noting the ticks.

However, a pet owner should be able to diagnose and treat ticks at home - no need for a vet to be paid for something so basic.

When I pay for a service I expect questions to be answered AND it is unacceptable for a vet to miss "something so basic". I've never taken care of pets before and I told the vet this. The take-away is to ask for Arnaud next time.

When I went to Agrovet to get my 7 puppies vaccinated, they told me to come back after a month for the second shot. Unfortunately, all but 1 puppy died afterwards, I found out later, that the second vaccination shot has to be given after 2 weeks, not 4 weeks.
So much for the professionalism, at Agrovet!!!
The best was, that they wanted to charge me for the shitty service when I brought the puppies in when the were sick.
Furthermore, they charge foreigners more than Khmer...

Anyone found an alternative?

Dear Bong Karem
If you check any website or contact any organisation regarding vaccinations then you will find that puppies receive their first combination vaccination at 6-8 weeks and the second combination shot at 10-12 weeks. The second injection is given between 2-4 weeks after the first. There is no set time interval, but I have never had or heard of any puppy receiving a second shot at 2 weeks. Thus it is entirely the decision of the vet and the type of vaccination he uses as to when he recommends the second shot. Most vets use 3-4 weeks as their baseline and as sad as I am to hear that the puppies died I do think you have been given false information regarding the error being Agrovets.

Well, that was the information I got from Agrovet, saying that the puppies are sick because we didn't bring them in time for the second shot (two weeks), if I have to do a degree as Veterinarian, because I can't trust them, where is the point in going there?

Dear Bong Karem
I think this sounds as if there has been some mis-communication. In your previous post you say you were told to bring them back after four weeks then you were told you did not bring them in on time. I would check with the vet using the booklet that he gives you when he does the first injections, they write in the booklet when you should take them for the second injection. If they told you that you were late then you could have shown them the booklet with the date in.

We are currently extremely disappointed with Agrovet. We had lost our much beloved dog to kidney failure after the course of events :

Our dog had severe diarrhea for days, we have suspected that he had licked some antiseptic spray.

We took him to see two vets :
The Khmer vet from Olympic said he would like to admit him immediately and put his on fluids for a week.

We took his to agrovet and the vet there gave us antibiotics and smecta for 10 days, sent us home ( although we mentioned the suspected poisoning ).
We were told to return if he isn't better by the end of his treatment.

We trusted Agrovet and followed his advice. We gave him the full course from agrovet, and took him back after the end of treatment but unfortunately it was too late.

Had we listened to the Khmer vet, our dog had a much better chance - As we later found out, diarrhea is a classic symptom of poisoning.

We're not looking for any blame for this tragic course of events - Some dogs act normally and do not show the typical symptoms, but we do feel it was definitely a negligent diagnosis.

There are no better options for animals in Cambodia, all clinics here are fine for routine treatment and simple problems, but if you want the best care for a serious condition, its unavailable here

We also had a bad experience wit Agrovet and Arno telling us stuff for two years, and the dog still has mange; now at PPAWS and he is getting better after just two months! I NO MORE TRUST AGROVET, a friend lost her two dogs there, too, to neglect of Agrovet!

I got a good Cambodian vet, he does home-service.
For all routine jobs, vaccinations, tick control and common diseases.
The vaccins are cooled like it should.
Never tried an operation as my dogs are healthy.
AND he is cheap...

I would also think that Dr. Lim is quiet efficient.

We have also started a Pet grooming, Boarding & Creche facility, Pet Relocation, Pet Photography in Toul Kork area.

We have a strict no cage policy as we don not believe in over booking and crowding the place with animals as they are all allowed to roam freely just as if in their own house. However we insist that Pets have to be vaccinated and treated for tick & flea infestations.
