Hello,

We will be moving from Tanzania to Cambodia in about two months time, and we would like to take our two dogs with us, but they will have to travel on their own, once we have found a place to stay. I'm trying to find regulations on importing dogs to Cambodia and about airport rules when in transit, they might have to change plane in Bangok. Any information more then welcome.

Thanks

Bernadette

We handle exports from Asia quite frequently at PetRelocation.com, and I thought I'd offer you some tips.

One of the most important things will be to insure that whatever airline you fly her on, you are flying only on planes that have pressurized & climate-conrolled cargo/luggage cabins. Bigger planes (like 737's and upwards) all have pressurized, climate controlled cargo holds. Smaller regional jets (Embraers, CRJs, etc.) do not -- these are the planes you hear the "horror stories" about.

With regards to import requirements/documentation for the US, they are:

- Current rabies vaccination certificate (needs to have been given within the last year but more than 30 days prior -- if given less than 30 days prior, you will have to sign a document upon arrival in the States)

- Health certificate dated within 10 days stating your pet is healthy to travel internationally and free of disease.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Kind regards,
Rachel

Hi,

We brought two cats to Cambodia twice - first time four years ago and then just a year ago. We had the standard certificates ready for them but nobody asked any questions at the airport.
Unless the rules changed over the year, your dogs should be fine with valid vaccinations and heath certificates issued by an authorised veterinarian in the originating country.

When we travelled with the cats via Bangkok we had to make a day stopover there. We took the cats to the hotel for the overnight stay and we needed to get a short-term permit for that from the airport quarantine service. Again, valid vaccinations and health certificate were enough.

On another occasion, we only changed planes in Bangkok and did not need to deal with Thai quarantine service at all.

My experience with bringing pets to Cambodia shows that airlines are actually more picky about all the formalities that the airport veterinary service.

Copied from a previous post of mine

To Enter Cambodia you need current Medical Certificates confirming animal is disease free and must have current rabies vaccination. However coming from Australia the hardest part was providing AQIS that we were allowed to import the at into Cambodia otherwise AQIS will not issue a export certificate. And it had to be on Cambodian government letterhead as there are no websites or brochures in english that outline the rules for importation. They were real pricks and would not accept a translation of the law certified by an Australian lawyer.

It was hard to find out someone in the appropriate government department. IT not Customs & Excise - That when i found out that Customs & Excise has one mobile phone as a contact point that was never answered. I then emailed them asking them to confirm my understanding of the law for importing pets and 3 days later I received a short anonymous text message telling me I was right - this of course was useless for AQUIS.

However I finally found out how to get a letter that will satify AQIS by contacting a Government minister that was a family friend of a colleague.

You need to write a letter (example below) to the Dept of Animal health, drop the letter off and then they will write a letter authorizing the import of the pet. When you collect this letter a $20 fee(no receipt) maybe requested.

When the pet arrives you go out to the airport and pick up the import papers you then take these with your letter from Dept Animal health and take it to get stamped at customs office in City and then back to airport to clear customs and collect pet. This was our experience in December 2007. Make sure you get an early morning flight into PP so that you have time to pick up your cat same day.

WE used a pet transport company in Adelaide to make all the arrangements with vaccination certificates liaising with AQIS and then dealt ourselves with customs this end.

Re: Importing Pet cat into Cambodia

Dear Sir,

I have been living in Cambodia since June 2007 and my wife arrived here last month to join me. We plan on being in Cambodia for at least five years. We have come here to work and volunteer and also learn about Cambodian culture and its people.

We would like to bring our pet cat (male neutered) with us to join us in Cambodia. Our cat has been vaccinated against Rabies, rhinotrachetis, Calicnfus, clamadia and entertis. The cat is microchipped and we will have a current heath certificate issued by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) certifying that the cat is healthy and free of disease.

To issue a health certificate AQIS requires confirmation in writing of the latest import requirements from the relevant government authority in the importing country. Therefore to assist us could you please confirm in writing what requirements you have to allow the import of our pet cat into Cambodia?

Thank you for your assistance

SOME MORE CAT INFO
If you have time you should get your cats vaccinated for feline HIV as it is more common here than in Australia but they dont have the vaccine here because not enough cat owners here are interested.

AGROVET is an excellent vet here.
You can only get wiskas dry and wet catfood here but if you cats eat fresh fish it will be kitty food paradise.

Thank you all for your response, very helpfull information Laughing out loud . Our biggest worry is that they will probably fly with Ethiopian airlines, not much choice there, and will probably have to change plane in Bangkok, and nobody will be there to make sure that everything is ok...

Dear Bernadette,

In 4 weeks time, I'll be travelling to Cambodia coming from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, also using Ethiopian Airlines.
I'm currently also considering having my dog wait in Ouaga till I found a suitable home in Phnom Penh, but I'm reluctant to do so.
Can you please let me know whether all worked out ok ?

And would you happen to know a possibility for one week where my dog could stay while I do field visits ? As soon as I arrive, a 6-day trip is planned to visit the partnerprojects throughout the country, and I have no idea who will be able to take care of my dog during that week. Preferably, I find a family that wants to host him for a week, take him for walks or has a big garden. That would be from July 12th till July 17th.

Thx for any advice you can give me, best regards,
Karen

Phnom Penh is actually pretty dog friendly, so if you are worried about the cargo experience, I'd bring your dog with you.

Is he/she a big barker? If not, I can tell you that there are a number of dog-friendly hotels in Phnom Penh, and in off-season (June-October) this should be particularly easy. The Scandinavia Hotel is a boutique in BKK I, very well located, nice pool and shuffleboard (!!) parlor upstairs. Eric, the owner, has dogs and if you arrange in advance he may well allow yours. $45-$75 a night, last I checked. http://www.hotel-scandinavia-cambodia.com/ . The Pavillion, another boutique hotel, has told us that the dog can join us at their pool if he is well-behaved. They may allow pets in the off-season.

Believe it or not, there is also a "Dog Resort" called the "Bokor Dog Inn" in Kampot (4 hours from PP) run by a very nice Belgian MD who works in nutrition. He will pick dogs up in Phnom Penh if scheduled. His e-mail is: bokordoginn [at] yahoo [dot] com

I think you can also board at Agrovet, the excellent French vet here in Phnom Penh (tel. +855 23 216 323, No 26, Street 294).

PM Me if you need more information.
