Hi
I have just arrived and will be here for a couple of years (but the puppy will be forever). I have promised my 5 year old a puppy - he has been waiting since he was two. How do I go about getting a reasonably small - medium breed - prefer a non-barker and kid friendly breed. Can somebody help. My mobile is 081824913 or my email is ambishous [at] ozemail [dot] com [dot] au Thank you
Anny

Your best bet would be to head to Agrovet (st 294 in between 51 and 57). they have a notice board there and there are often dogs available for adoption or for sale. also, check the Cambodia Parent Network on Yahoo groups-- there are some missionary groups here who breed and sell Daschunds.

good luck, and please for your dog's sake (and your child's) take your dog to a qualified vet. the stories that we hear from clients about local vets are shocking, and it could cost your dog its life. keep in mind there are no places to train to be a vet here in cambodia, anyone can hang a sign outside their door if they want. the best game in town is Agrovet, they are all French.

Good luck!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for a puppy for your son, however I hope you will consider my suggestion. Their are 100's of stray dogs on the streets of Phnom Penh who are at risk being captured, killed and sold for dog meat. I'm not sure how old your son is but have you considered rescuing a dog together? You could teach him about the stray dogs around PP and why its much better to rescue a dog, rather than to buy one. You could make it a great bonding experience between you and your son and I'm sure he will learn a lot from it. You could even train it together. Even if your son is only young, you could explain to him that this is a good thing that you are doing and as he gets older remind him of why you rescued a dog instead of buying one. I think this would be a great teaching experience for your son and obviously it would be great for the dog Laughing out loud Thanks and good luck finding your dog Smile

PS - the reason I suggested this is because there are many dog breeders around Phnom Penh who treat the breeding dogs really bad. By buying a breeded dog it is encouraging the owner to continue to breed, which is bad for the dog. If more people rescued dogs, instead of buying them from breeders, the less sales they would get which means less or no dog breeding. Better for the dogs Smile

And how do you tell your then 7 year old that the pup was only temporary?

There's a pet shop next to Sovanna shopping centre - on the street at the back - which occasionally has some small breeds. Also try a roadside 'stall' opposite Lucky Supermarket between the CD shop and service station. I don't like the way they keep the dogs but you might just find what you're looking for and provide a better home.
