Bring a puppy from the States OR get a dog in Cambodia?

Looking for some advice from pet owners / dog lovers / people in the know:

I would love a medium sized dog, and was recently in Thailand where I saw a whole bunch of gorgeous yellow labs / golden retrievers, etc. I've heard they nearly all come from puppy mills Sad

Is it possible to find a lab or similar puppy in Cambodia that is not from a puppy mill?? I've been in Cambodia for two years and have never seen one, so I'm not going to hold my breath on this.

I would be very willing to adopt a dog from Cambo, do not want the standard sort of Cambodian ridgeback looking feral dogs that roam the city...

I am going to the States for three weeks very soon and I could adopt a puppy there and bring it back - but I'm having difficulties justifying the idea of putting a puppy in an airplane if I don't have to.

Any suggestions / recommendations?

Has anyone ever flown from the States with puppy before?

Thanks,

Robert

there are plenty of dogs of all looks and types available to be adopted or rescued here, you would be doing all dogs in cambodia a service by taking one of those rather than bringing another dog over.

I would think there are also a lot of health risks involved in bringing a puppy from the US over here, Cambodian dogs are pretty resilient and any puppy here will sniff and consume a lot of nasty stuff.

If you are dead set on a specific breed, there are some people breeding dogs legitimately although I would highly encourage adopting, check out PPAWS.

Hey,

Thanks much for the advice, I had no idea that PPAWS existed. I will contact them.

HI Robert, I work for PPAWS, and definately recommend adopting a dog, because you are right, there are too many puppy farms and the conditions are terrible. We are trying to discourage purchases of these dogs as much as possible and one of the best ways to do that is to show an example of adopting a local dog. Please call Madame Loan on 010842615, she has many rescued dogs of all kinds who need homes. Be aware that it will be confronting visiting her house but these are all dogs who have been rescued from terrible conditions. PPAWS also has so many cats and kittens if you are interested, please get in touch with us via enquiries [dot] ppaws [at] gmail [dot] com

Charlie,

Thanks for addressing this directly. I am going to speak with the SPCA when I get home and make a decision about flying...the more I learn about rescued dogs here, the more I want to avoid them based on temperament, behavior, trauma, etc., sadly I just don't have the time or resources to take care of dog that has issues.

I'll contact Madame Loan before I make any decisions though.

Thanks,

Robert

Dear Robert,
I help to run PPAWS with Charlie and I have two dogs that I have rescued here in Cambodia. They are lovely dogs and compared to the dog I had in the UK and the dog I rescued and brought over from China they are no different in terms of temperament, unfortunately most of the time the problems with behavior etc are more due to the owner and the lack of time spent training the dogs.
Using Madame Loan I have housed two puppies with colleagues from work and they adore them, they have a young son and are very active and often take them when they go running.
If you get a puppy then you have the opportunity to train them to behave as you want them to, whereas some of the older dogs have already had experiences which are harrowing that shape them. That being said you can find the same problems in the UK and US with dogs that have been treated badly and have had to be rescued.
I think that you could talk with Agrovet about this and contact Madame Loan to see the puppies she has. Alternatively I have seen two dogs on this site being offered for adoption and perhaps you could check them out before you dismiss Cambodian dogs. Please email or call me if you need any more help, I am Nicky and my phone number and email are on the website adoption page. I have four dogs at the minute and walk them regularly, I also have cats that are rescued from the pagoda and the dogs are fine with them.

Marie Ens at Place of Rescue just outside Phnom Penh breeds golden retrievers from Canada. I bought my pup from her and he's gorgeous. I think the idea of adopting rescue animals is great too, but if you specifically want a golden, there you go. Look up Place of Rescue on Google and get in touch.

Plenty of dogs here. No need to bring a new puppy.
