totallyrandomman talks to comedian and event organiser Jonathon Atherton about Phnom Penh’s first international stand up comedy night.
On Tuesday, December the 6th, there will be a landmark in the rapidly evolving cultural fabric of Phnom Penh. Pontoon will be hosting Cambodia’s first ever international stand-up comedy night.
The line up will feature three comedians, drawn from three continents with three very different comic styles. So who are these trailblazers venturing into a new comedy landscape?
Ward Anderson hails from Atlanta, Georgia and provides a high-energy, rapid–fire stand up show bursting with offbeat observations. As well as being a stand up, he is the author of the best-selling “The Ultimate Bachelor’s Guide”, an actor on stage and TV, radio presenter, music video director, novelist and kitchen sink fabricator (n.b. the last entry on this list may not be factually accurate.)
Shazia Mirza (Urdu: شازیه ميرزا ) is a British comedian and columnist. Much of her work is a wryly humorous observation of life as a British Muslim and of her childhood growing up to Pakistani parents in Birmingham. Before becoming a comedian, she worked as a Science Teacher in a Secondary School in London, where rapper Dizzee Rascal was one of her students.
Jonathon Atherton is the comedy personification of wanderlust. Currently resident in Singapore, having lived and worked in Uganda, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya and Thailand, and speaking more languages than an Icelandic diplomat. his comedy revels in multilinguist puns and international flights of fancy, all delivered with an irreverence that is unmistakeably Ausssie. He is also one of the masterminds behind the organisation of the evening.
The event is on Tuesday 6th of December at 7pm at Pontoon Club . Tickets are US$10, which includes a free Tiger draft or soft drink.
