Embassy Phnom Penh Remembers the 10th Anniversary of the September 11th Attacks
U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia, Carol A. Rodley, presided over a brief ceremony at the U.S. Embassy to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. “On September 11, 2001, the innocence of the world changed,” said Ambassador Rodley to honor the thousands of lives lost in New York, Washington, and Shanksville and all victims of terrorism. After the Ambassador’s remarks, the U.S. Marine Corps Security Detachment lowered the flag at half-staff and paused for a minute of silence at 8:46 a.m. – the time that American Airlines flight #11 struck the south tower of the World Trade Center.
An audience of over 50 observers, including U.S. Embassy personnel and American citizens residing in Phnom Penh, joined the memorial.
Ambassador Rodley also recited President Barack Obama’s proclamation on the occasion of Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. The proclamation encouraged Americans and citizens of the world “to join together in serving their communities and neighborhoods in honor of the victims of the September 11 attacks.”
After the ceremony, attendees took the opportunity to viewed a display of newspaper cover pages from around the world on the day after the September 11th attacks. For the Americans in attendance, they appreciated the chance to remember that day.
