Deputy Governer Mann Chhoeurn made the declaration at a national workshop on air pollution held Thursday in the capital.

He added that, while a study conducted by the municipality had recently found that a clean water supply was currently sufficient, the city hall will nonetheless expand the supply to seven more districts in Phnom Penh and to its outskirts.

"in this year's dry season the authority's plans to produce over 86 million cubic meters of clean water."

"We have resumed cooperation with France to expand clean water production facilities in [Phnom Penh's] Niroth commune," he added.

He explained that the facilities will become operational by 2010, to tackle an estimated population rise in the city from 1.5 to 2 million, adding that it will enable the city to keep water reserves.

Ros Det, head of Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority's Production Office, said that in this year's dry season the authority's plans to produce over 86 million cubic meters of clean water. "We can produce 248,000 liters per day," he said.
