Badung Lifesaver Goes to Darwin for Arafura Games

Badung Lifesaver (Balawista) team had the honor to attend the championship of Arafura Games 2011 in Darwin, Australia. The nine contingents representing Indonesia would show off their capability in the world championship. “This championship will last for eight days, namely on May 7-14, 2011,” said Chairman of the contingent, I Gede Berata, when meeting with the Regent of Badung, AA Gde Agung, Tuesday (May 3).

The contingent with 9 personnel, explained Berata, consisted of 6 athletes, 2 officials and an ambassador of Australia as liaison officer which had been a volunteer for 6 months in Badung. In the championship participated by 31 countries, Badung Lifesaver also competed on the beach and in the sea. Types of games attended in the sea consisted of the 200 meters swim (surf race), 1.5 km swim (long swim) and run-swim-run. Meanwhile, the games on the beach included the beach flag, beach relay and beach sprint (200 meters).

Berata further explained that Badung Lifesaver had often participated in the championship both in national and international level with the achievement such as the third champion for the beach relay in Melbourne, Australia (2006), The Best Asia at the World Lifesaving Championship in Japan by winning 2 silvers and 1 bronze (1990).

Meanwhile, the Regent Gde Agung accompanied by the Head of Badung Government Tourism Office Cok Darmawan and Division Head of Object and Tourist Attraction Services, Raka Yudha, left a message in order they could take advantage of the event while enhancing the skills to gain experience, representing the region, nation as well as tourism ambassador.
