“Officials of the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy said that technical obstacles against the export of products from Cambodia are a very serious problem. ‘We do not have proper national standards, and we have not any in line with ASEAN. As
a member of the World Trade Organization, we need to eliminate such commercial obstacles.’
An outbreak of diarrhea, some of which is due to cholera, has been reported in at least 11 provinces across the country, including the capital Phnom Penh and Rattanakiri in the northeast. Around 4,000 cases are suspected.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 60 people have died and at least 20 out of 24 provinces have reported cases. The outbreak is attributed to contaminated water. The Ministry of Health has mobilised health care workers to treat those affected.

“Phnom Penh: Khmer citizens in Svay Rieng village, Ta Lan commune, Sesan district, Stung Treng, who live along the Sesan River, suffer from infectious diseases because they use dirty water flowing from the Yali dam in Vietnam.
“A woman in the village, Sa Ngak, 22, said, ‘My son Oeun Khon, 7, has had diarrhea and he has been vomiting for several days.’ She added that her son fell sick because he drank yellowish water from the Sesan River, coming from the Yali dam in Vietnam.
I finally got to experience Siem Reap's notorious Royal Angkor International Hospital. I have heard so many stories from travellers and expats about outrageous fees (you can read one customer's experience here). One expat told me, for instance, the hospital often recommends patients do an MRI scan, whether necessary or not.

“Phnom Penh: Expert officials of the Ministry of Health said that fake medicines and illicit health services are a complex problem for a developing country like Cambodia.
“A secretary of state of the Ministry of Health and deputy director of the inter-ministry committee for combating fake medicines and illicit heath services, Dr. Heng Taikry, said during a meeting of this committee at the Ministry of Health on 22 December 2009, ‘At present, fake medicines and illicit health services are a complicated challenge for Cambodia.’

“Phnom Penh: A secretary of state of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Mr. Om Kimsea, said recently that according to a study, each year about 3,200,000 liters of pesticides are used, corresponding to about US$20 million, and 57% of those pesticides are applied to vegetables.
“Mr. Om Kimsea added that in agriculture, chemicals like anorganic fertilizer and agricultural pesticides are one of the most well known means farmers use due to their effectiveness. However, if those chemicals do not conform to proper technical standards [or if they are not used properly!!!], they might be hazardous to human health, to animals, and to the environment.
